Amanda Balionis loves golf, but carrying the bag is not her thing (2024)

Amanda Balionis’ is one of the most visible faces in the golf media today. Like most of us, the CBS on-course reporter, known for her engaging presence on the sidelines, had her early experiences with golf, but ultimately chose not to pursue a golf career. The reason is less profound than one might think.

Balionis has made a name for herself as a versatile sports reporter, covering not just golf, but also college football and the NFL. Her vibrant personality and in-depth knowledge of sports have made her a beloved figure in the broadcasting world.

Beyond her professional achievements, Amanda Balionis is also a passionate advocate for animal welfare, working with organizations like ‘K9s for Warriors’ and founding ‘Puppies and Golf,’ which promotes animal shelters and the bond between humans and dogs.

Amanda Balionis relationship with golf

Amanda Balionis’ journey with golf began at the tender age of nine. As she told to Golf Digest, growing up in a golf-loving family, she was naturally inclined to the sport, playing junior golf and enjoying the game with her parents.

However, a pivotal moment came when she had to carry her own bag and walk nine holes by herself.

“I played junior golf for a few years; my parents loved playing with me, but the minute I had to carry my own bag and walk nine holes by myself, I was like, ‘Eh, you know what, I’m going to go join the swim team,'” Amanda Balionis shared.

Reflecting on her approach to golf, Balionis emphasized that enjoyment and balance are key.

“For me, I never loved the idea of going out there multiple times a week and playing 18 holes every time. What’s most fun for me is going out with my friends or family and playing a fun nine holes,” she said.

This laid-back attitude towards the sport contrasts with the high-stakes environment of professional golf but aligns perfectly with her role as a broadcaster, where she brings out the personal stories and lighter moments in the game.

Despite her deep involvement in golf broadcasting, Amanda Balionis’ personal relationship with the sport remains casual. She explained:

“Golf is a weird sport. Most people assume that if I cover the game, I must be very competitive with it. But that’s not the case.”

This perspective has allowed her to enjoy the game without the pressures of competitive play, focusing instead on the joy and relaxation it brings.

Amanda Balionis provided a candid look into her career and the experiences that shaped her path. She recounted her excitement and gratitude when she was asked to join the CBS golf team, highlighting the support she received from her family.

“When they first asked me to join the Golf on CBS team, I just felt really lucky and grateful,” she said.

The role came with challenges, but also opportunities for growth and learning. One of the standout moments in her career was an impromptu golf lesson from Peter Kostis, a renowned golf instructor and CBS analyst.

“Peter Kostis gave me a golf lesson the other day. He looked at my swing and said, ‘We have a lot of work to do.’ It was the most grueling hour lesson I’ve ever had, but it was so much fun,” Amanda Balionis recalled.

This experience not only improved her game but also deepened her appreciation for the intricacies of golf.

Amanda Balionis also shared humorous anecdotes about her interactions with other golf legends, including a memorable encounter with Jack Nicklaus. She described playing a game of Tic-Tac-Toe with Nicklaus on the CBS Smart Cart, a moment that underscored the blend of professionalism and camaraderie that defines her work environment.

“To see how competitive he was about it, just like with everything, was amazing. I lost to Jack Nicklaus in Tic-Tac-Toe, and it was unreal,” she recounted with a laugh.

As for her future goals, Amanda Balionis expressed a desire to continue growing within CBS Sports, aiming to expand her role and contribute even more significantly to the team.

“The dream gig would be full-time golf and football, no question,” she stated, underscoring her passion for both sports and her ambition to excel in the broadcasting arena.
