One week after Chappell Roan set a firm boundary with fans for her own safety (and sanity), fellow pop star Madison Beer is following suit. On Wednesday, the “15 Minutes” singer posted an Instagram Story defending her right to turn down photo requests while on tour. The 25-year-old, who is currently performing across Asia and Australia as part of The Encore tour through September, seemed to be addressing inquiries from her fans “as to why I say no to photos” when approached at hotels.
“helllloooo just comin [sic] on here bc i’ve seen some people confused … while on tour hotels are essentially my temporary home and i’m entitled to some private time same as anybody else…🤍,” she wrote. “i will also usually say no to pics etc in my hotel bc it also then reveals the location to a lot of other people and unfortunately can put me in danger. hope you understand n can respect that ! love u.”
Beer’s plea comes in the midst of a whirlwind year for women in pop music. The genre’s muses — from Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, and Reneé Rapp to Charli XCX and Addison Rae — are collectively operating at the height of their powers and have never been more visible, or consumable for that matter. But with each overnight sensation comes heightened security concerns, and Roan’s appeal to her fans marks a tipping point in terms of what young female artists are willing to put up with. “I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous,” the 26-year-old said in a TikTok this month. “I don’t care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job, [or] the career field I’ve chosen. That does not make it OK. That doesn’t make it normal.” What is normal is respecting clear boundaries … even for pop stars. Whether Beer’s fans are willing to cooperate remains to be seen.
