I had the most culturally appropriate virtual visit with a clinician yesterday afternoon. She framed her guidance and assessments in such ways as, “our ethnic groups as Asian and African American females are likely to experience these health conditions, our health outcomes are more favorable if we take these steps” and then proceeded to send me culturally appropriate studies to review and reference to validate her treatment plans. Of further importance, she had likely assessed both my literacy and health literacy through my written and oral responses. All details were uploaded and documented in MyChart (electronic medical record) for all other providers to review and consider in future follow-up. As an early proponent for the patient centered medical homes (PCMH) model, I saw and experienced the benefits of coordinated comprehensive care, patient-centered, accessible services, as well as quality and safety. DNP Lee of Johns Hopkins demonstrated an extraordinary example of where our health systems can easily and readily address better outcomes for all. #quality #patientcenteredcare #PCMH #virtualvisits #thismatters#primarycare #healthequity #noexcuses#medicine #nursepractitioner #publichealth

A wonderful opportunity to dig into some of the issues plaguing clinical research companies and providers all over the worldsAttrition is natural but constant turnover is not. How to fairly and appropriately address workload is crucial to retaining trained and experienced staff. In my own work experiences thus far, I have found that work load is the number one reason for high turnover. How do we assess this to resource workers with enough work to justify a position but without burnout.

I was invited to a big hospital system in Columbus today training residents on trauma-mindful medicine.I’m always delighted to work with healthcare systems who desire to prioritize and integrate trauma-informed care. Here are a few key elements of applying trauma-informed care in healthcare settings:🔑BE MINDFUL that every patient is a full whole human which includes their lived experiences and intersection of identities which may include medical stress and trauma🔑PRACTICE THE PAUSE in a fast paced environment find ways to pause so you can align your intentions and impact to resist harm and promote all types of safety🔑SHIFT YOUR LANGUAGE take small shifts towards building trust by being mindful of jargon and don’t forget to actively listen.🔑PACE YOURSELF 15 minute visits are tough to get it all in but you can still be mindful of the pace and check in with patients to make sure you’re not flooding them.Simple shifts can mean lasting impact.Trauma-informed care can not only improve patient experience, engagement and outcomes, it can also have the same impact on the workforce providing this care. It’s a culture shift but one we can’t afford to wait to adopt. This is my passion. And if you want me to bring these principles to your workplace, let’s talk.https://lnkd.in/gUQ9Mbpi#healthcare #healthcareleadership #trauma #traumainformed #traumainformedcare #traumainformedleadership #patientexperience

Embracing a #professionalpause has granted me the freedom to share insights without constraints. Without concerns about affiliations or institutional restrictions, I freely addressed all questions. In about 12 minutes, I explained the fundamental aspects of a clinic visit and stressed the significance of PMH, past medical history—a seemingly ordinary yet often overlooked aspect. It was a fulfilling experience! I'm optimistic about witnessing thorough documentation of this individual's PMH, showcasing the progression of their health journey. #MedicalEducation #PatientCare #priorauthorization #managedcare #patientadvocacy

👋 Meet Dr. Anthony DiGioia, medical director of the Center for Bone and Joint Health (CBJH) at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. 🏥 Dr. DiGioia and the clinical staff at CBJH believe that listening to their patients is a key element in improving a patient’s health condition and overall wellness. How do they do this? The care team uses a listening tool called "What Matters To You?" to understand each patient’s priorities and set treatment goals based on those indicated priorities.🔗 Learn more on how Dr. DiGioia and the members of his team are putting patients' priorities first in their treatment: https://bit.ly/3RzRvx7#BoneandJointHealthActionWeek

It has been a decade since this article explored consumer comprehension of physical therapy as a distinct healthcare profession and the subsequent effects this has on utilization. Unfortunately, the physical therapy field continues to need a clearly defined identity in the minds of both practitioners and patients. Without solid boundaries delineating our scope of practice, standards of care, and unique value, misconceptions remain rampant among the general public about what physical therapists do. Establishing this professional self-concept is imperative as we move towards alternative payment and delivery models. We must communicate our capacities as movement and rehabilitation experts to our patients, fellow providers, and healthcare administrators. This will allow us to advocate for systems, legislation, and programs that fully leverage physical therapists' skills while ensuring fiscal sustainability. As a discipline, we have to address these identity issues; we can shift public perception and increase the value and utilization of the potential of physical therapy to transform individual and population health outcomes.
