A 1 0 The TIMES-REPORTER Dec. 1.1972 DOVER-NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO Obituaries FREDERICK DOWDY Charles C. Cochran Charles C. Cochran, 90, of 2422 E. High New Philadelphia, a retired Warwick Township road supervisor, died Thursday in Dover Nursing Center.

He had been ill two months. Born at St. Clairsville, he was a son of George and Louise Summers Cochran. He was one of the eldest members of Sharon Moravian Church at Tuscarawas and Ninevah Grange. His wife, the former Hattie Dade Powell, died in 1939.

Surviving are four sons and two daughters, Kenneth of Tuscarawas, Floyd C. of Canton, Walter R. of Dover, Harmon D. of Massillon, and Mrs. Russell (Ida) Gurtner and Mrs.

Veda Reichman of New Philadelphia; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Hicks of Martins Ferry and Mrs. Martha Ogleby of Wheeling, W. 25 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. A son, daughter, three brothers and four sisters are deceased.

Revs. Gordon Stoltz and Wilfred Harke will officiate at services Sunday at 2 p.m. in Kaserman-Naylor Funeral Home, where friends may call Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Interment will be in Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery. Fred S.

Dowdy, retired Dover imer D. ch upp minister, dies Frederick S. Dowdy, 83, of 123 E. Iron Dover, who retired Jan. 9, 1966, after more than a half century in the ministry, died Thursday afternoon in East Avenue Nursing Home in New Philadelphia where he had been a patient two weeks.

Pastor of First Christian Church in Dover from Dec. 20, 1964, until his retirement, he was recognized for years as one of the leading Christian church ministers in the country. He held pastorates in 11 states and for several years traveled the nation as an evangelist. In addition to Dover he served churches in Cleveland, East Sparta and Howenstine during his Ohio ministry. A native of Lawrence County, Kentucky, he was a son of John and Nancy Smith Dowdy and one of 13 children.

Born in a log cabin, he became an avid student and was well-versed in the Hebrew language. He received degees at the University of Kentucky, Eugene Bible University in Oregon and Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh. He taught at Eastern State College and Louisville Bible College in Kentucky before entering the ministry. Surviving are his widow, Bonnie Winbigler Dowdy; a daughter and two sons, Mrs. William (Julia) Norris, whose husband is a minister in Wellsburg; Dr.

F. Ashley Dowdy of Lancaster and Dr. Barton Dowdy, president of Northwest Christian College in Eugene, Two stepdaughters, Mrs. John (Connie) Lahr of Dover and Mrs. Eugene (Barbara) Gibbs of New Philadelphia; three brothers and three sisters, Rev.

Mark Dowdy of Georgetown, 0., Ellis of West Union, 0., Mrs. Mildred Scott of Portsmouth, William and Mrs. Marie Tomlin of South Shore, and Mrs. Hazel Stewart of Maloneton, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son and six brothers and sisters.

Friends may call Saturday from 2 to 4 in Toland-Herzig Funeral Home at Dover. Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Morton Funeral Home at South Shore, where friends may call Sunday afternoon and night. Revs. Clyde Callahan and Omar Miller will officiate and burial will be in Mt.

Zion Cemetery at South Shore. Paul W. Adkins Paul W. Adkins, 43, of 1035 Prospect st. NW, New Philadelphia, a roller at Republic Steel Co.

in Massillon, died this morning at Union Hospital following an eight-week illness. Born at Hubball, W. he was a son of John Adkins of Branchland, W. and the late Maude Ferrell Adkins. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member and trustee of Dover Baptist Temple and a member of the United Steel Workers of America, AFL-CIO.

Others surviving are his widow, the former Virginia A. Bucher; a daughter and a son, Cheryl and Gregory, both of the home; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Lax and Mrs. Rick (Sandra) Engler of New Philadelphia; a brother and three sisters, Willard W. Adkins of Cincinnati, Mrs. Lester (Dorothy) Alfred of Reva, Mrs.

Berdie Adkins of Brooksville, and Mrs. Homer (Greathel) Miller of Branchland, W. and a grandchild. A brother and a sister are deceased. Services will be Monday at 11 a.m.

Chupp, 57, of RD 2, a resident of Wilmot until a year ago, died of an apparent heart attack this morning in his home. Born at Wooster to the late David J. and Mary Smucker Chupp, he was a retired employe of the state highway department, working out of Wilmot, and a member of Longenecker Mennonite Church near Winesburg. Surviving are his widow, the former Mattie Schlabach; five daughters and a son, Mrs. Nelson D.

Earl S. (Betty) Small wood of the home, Mrs. Alan (Barbara) Shaw of Millington, and Levi of Navarre; two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Lydia) Lint of Big Prairie and Mrs. E.W.

(Susan) Clark of Shreve; a half-sister, Mrs. Grace Norris of Killbuck, and 17 grandchildren. Services will be Sunday at 2 in the church with Rev. Albert C. Slabach officiating.

Verna 0. Glazier, 85, of 406 Front st. SE, New Philadelphia, died this morning in Union Hospital after a three- month illness. A life resident of New Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Wallace B. and Nannie G.

Scott Stiffler. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and East elementary PTA. Her husband, Charles A. Glazier, died in 1965. Surviving are four daughters and four sons, Midge E.

Glazier of the home, Mrs. Howard (Ruth) Rippel of Canton, Mrs. Gertrude Bretzius and Mrs. Marguerite Benbow, both of Clearwater, Glenn of Fort Worth, Dean of San Quentin, Charles (Robert) and Donald both of New Philadelphia; three- brothers, Merlin Stiffler of New Philadelphia, Elmer of Alliance and Homer of Dover; 19 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; three step- grandchildren, and a step-great-grandchild. A son and two brothers are deceased.

The family asks that donations be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church Building Fund. C. Ralph Draher C. Ralph Draher, 66, of 307 North av. NE, New Philadelphia, a retired mechanic, died Thursday in East Avenue Nursing Home following a long illness.

He was born at Newcomerstown, a son of the late Charles and Ida Schlupp Draher. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church. His wife, Helen M. Sopinski Draher, died in November 1971. Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Alvin Carl Mrs.

Jeffrey (Alice) Edie and Mrs. Phyllis Burnworth of New Philadelphia; three brothers and two sisters, Kenneth of New Philadelphia, Vernon of Morgantown, W. Donald of Somerdale, and Mrs. Mabel Marquand and Mrs. Frances Couts of West Lafayette, and seven grandchildren.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, the Adult Bible Class and Anna Circle. Surviving in addition to her husband are a son and daughter, Rev. Don J. Voelm, pastor of First United Church of Christ in Gallon and Mrs.

George (Ruth) Varns of Freelandsville, whose husband is pastor of a church there; seven grandchildren, a great-grandchild, and three sisters and a brother, Doris, Blanche and Anna Beitler of Uhrichsville and Wilbur of Carrollton. Mrs. Mary Longsworth Mrs. Mary Longsworth, 92, a 45-year resident of Strasburg, died Thursday in the Dover Nursing Center, where she had been a patient two years. She was born in Guernsey County to John and Lucinda Smith Burris and was a member of Strasburg United Methodist Church.

Her husband, John died in 1930 and she was also preceded in death by four brothers. Her only survivors are three nephews, Paul and Floyd Burris of Bolivar and Walter of Greenville, Tenn. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Lebold Funeral Home at Bolivar, where friends may call tonight from 7 to 9. Rev.

Howard Fox will officiate and burial will be in Ft. Laurens Cemetery. Boyd Wallace NEWCOMERSTOWN Boyd (Grin- ny) R. Wallace, 72, of Akron, formerly of here, died Thursday in an Akron nursing home following a long illness. Born here, he was a son of the late Frank and Frances West Wallace.

Born at Byesville, he was a son of the late Clarence and Grace Dudley Sims. He was a kiln fireman at Fairfield Brick Co. in Zoarville and a World War II veteran.
