At a time when many higher education institutions are reducing language requirements, it is worth questioning how we prepare students for a global job market. The dissonance between "global education" goals in the US and the reduction of language instruction needs to be addressed:

More great news from our Spanish Program in the ! Our Teletandem Club connects our students with their peers at ITESO Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara and Universidad de Nariño to practice Spanish and help Latin American students practice English. This experience enhances our global education at MNSU-Mankato. The Teletandem Club is a reflection of the hard work of our stellar Teaching Assistant, Misu Palacios López, who helped us implement the club and expand it to include Colombian students. https://lnkd.in/g_h96BcuGlobal Education, Minnesota State University, Mankato

On Monday (April 8th), the Department of Philosophy, Languages & Cultures at MSU Mankato hosted "PanLingua: Undergraduate Conference on Languages & Cultures" this year. Founded in 2013 by Dr. Angela Helmer, PanLingua is an annual conference in the Upper Midwest that showcases undergraduate students' academic research and creative achievements in a variety of languages and cultures that they are studying at their institutions. This year, we were thrilled to have over 50 presentations in Spanish, French, German, Chinese/Mandarin, Lakota, and English. The diversity of our participants was inspiring, with students from Minnesota State University, Mankato, DePaul University at Chicago, South Dakota State University, University of South Dakota, and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, as well as Concurrent Enrollment students from Owatonna High School, all coming together to celebrate languages and cultures! Thanks to the generous support of the Nadine B. Andreas Endowment, we had the honor of hosting Dr. Viorica Marian as our Andreas Speaker at PanLingua. Her insightful lectures on the benefits of bilingualism for our cognitive functions and the social advantages of experiencing the world through multiple languages left a lasting impression on our robust audience of approximately 90 people. It was a pleasure having our MSU colleagues attend Dr. Marian's lectures. Thank you all for being so supportive! Our special thanks to Dean Christopher Brown, Dr. Sachi Sekimoto, Dr. Michael James Olson, Dr. Elizabeth Harsma, Dr. Kevin Parsneau, Dr. Nancy Drescher, Dr. Jim Grabowska, Dr. Kimberly Contag, and our department chair, Dr. Brandon Cooke! And, of course, this event would not have been possible without the support of our colleagues Dr. Daniela Goldfine, from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Dr. Angela Helmer from the University of South Dakota, Dr. Molly Krueger Enz and Dr. Eckhard Rölz from South Dakota State University, Nikki Snyder Roberts, our Concurrent Enrollment partner at Owatonna High School, and from Minnesota State University, Mankato, Dr. Evan Bibbee, Dr. Nadja Krämer, Dr. Alfredo Duplat, Dr. Rennesa Jessup, our Administrative Assistant Lauren Peterman, and our excellent students!

Wonderful! Let's also consider languages and bilingualism as a crucial tool to decolonize the curriculum.
