As we wrap up #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, we are proud to share the positive impact of our depression screenings on improving mental health and well-being in our community. 🌟Since implementation in 2023, we have screened 392,519 individuals for depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Among them, 1,545 showed signs of severe depression, and 2,694 shared thoughts of self-harm. 🩺💭Our behavioral health therapists work closely with the clinical team to support patients showing signs of severe depression or suicidal thoughts. They provide seamless care coordination, including urgent evaluations when needed, and guide patients to appropriate care with their primary care provider, psychiatrist, or behavioral health specialist. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery to replace a narrowed aortic valve. Since next-day discharge (NDD) after the TAVR procedure has gained popularity in recent years, a team of researchers led by Wayne Batchelor, MD, Associate Director of Inova Schar Heart and Vascular and System Director of Interventional Cardiology, studied readmission rates and clinical outcomes in NDD versus non‐NDD transcatheter aortic valve replacement. After studying data from nearly 30,000 patients treated with uncomplicated self-expanding TAVR procedures, the researchers concluded that NDD should be the default strategy for patients undergoing uncomplicated TAVR procedures since it has improved patient outcomes, making a significant advancement in cardiac care. After a severe fall last year, 81-year-old U.S. Army veteran Stanley Mills was admitted to the hospital, where blood work revealed he has amyloidosis, a condition where amyloid proteins build up on organ tissue, including the heart. Stanley then saw Timothy Welch, MD, FACC, an advanced heart failure cardiologist who leads the Inova Amyloid Program at Inova Schar Heart and Vascular.
