What is a butter board?

A butter board is almost like a charcuterie board for butter. It can have one butter spread across it or serve multiple varieties of butter to try! It makes for a lovely display at a gathering or a fun little dish for a "date night in." Serve whatever bread you like alongside it and enjoy!

This is a great way to serve homemade butter or storebought butter you've added a special touch to this holiday season! Make a holiday butter board with little spreaders placed in it so guests feel welcome to enjoy some as they spend time with loved ones.

Reminder: Do not serve honey to children under one year of age.

Savory Butter Options

These savory options are sure to be a hit. Herbs have my heart forever. Whether you grow your own or buy them at the store, adding them to your butter board is a no-brainer! Use your favorite herb butter recipe or check out these options.

  • Chives - Combine chopped chives, oregano, thyme, rosemary, basil, cracked black pepper, and sea salt for a savory butter option.
  • Garlic - Who doesn't love garlic butter? Make it even more herby by combining roasted garlic, basil, red pepper flakes, and sea salt for a slightly spicy butter!

What kinds of bread should I serve with a butter board?

Rolls, garlic bread, bruschetta, pumpernickel, and beyond! Whatever bread pairs well with your choice of butter flavor will be perfect for your spread.

How to set the display

There are a few different options to consider when setting up your butter board. Keep the number of guests in mind as well as where you will be setting this up so you can figure out what works for you!

  • Right on a board - You can use any size or shape charcuterie board to display your butters right on the surface itself. Put little labels near each so they are clearly marked. Have the spreading knives placed in each butter before displaying.
  • Ramekins - Ceramic ramekins make for a lovely and neat display. This method allows you to easily place them on any kind of setup you have on hand. Tip: set them up on a charcuterie board with different bread options around them to make it almost like a bread charcuterie board! (Remember the labels and spreaders!)
  • Cake stand - Set up your butters on a board (right on the surface itself or in small ramekins that fit on the cake stand) above the bread being served with it so it stands out and guests can easily see and read the labels.
